Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed Iron Sights Larry Vickers

"After using their optic mounts, I approached Scalarworks about making a set of fixed iron sights; what they came up with has exceeded my expectations. I'm now running Scalarworks iron sights and Aimpoint Micro mounts on my BCM carbine in all of my training classes. Scalarworks Leap Mounts and Peak Sights are the current state of the art."

From Peep to Post

In making the Peak Sights we left no stone unturned and few parts untouched.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed Iron Sights CNC machined

Every major component is custom designed with meaningful improvements to function, and precision CNC machined to the highest standards of fit & finish.

Right Radius

Peak Sights are designed around a modern 15" sight radius. While carbine length rifles have become the norm, most fixed iron sights still use components designed for the M16A2's 20" sight radius.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed Iron Sights adjustment

Peak Sights have manually adjustable elevation (front) and windage (rear): Both with a refined 0.5MOA/click, which matches most Red Dot sights'.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed Iron Sights post

The Peak sight post is CNC machined to the correct width for a 15" sight radius, non-rotating for finer adjustment, and flat faced to eliminate highlight bias.

Corrective Vision

The human eye intuitively centers objects within a bright aperture.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed Iron Sights peep

Peak Sights have precision CNC milled apertures that are flat toward the shooter, so they won't create highlight bias.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed Iron Sights peep

Stock A2 peep apertures are cast and have a scallop facing the shooter that can generate a misleading highlight.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed Iron Sights lightweight

LIGHT MADE RIGHT

Engineered to be the lightest fixed iron sights in existence, without compromising an ounce of strength.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed iron sights 7075-T6

Every Peak sight is CNC milled from 7075-T6 aluminum billet, which has vastly superior mechanical properties to 6061-T6, and is used where ultimate strength and durability outweigh cost considerations.

Scalarworks PEAK/Fixed iron sights Low Profile

Smooth is Fast

Peak Sights have a streamlined profile free of protruding levers and knobs that won't rap your knuckles, or get caught on clothing, gear, and surroundings.

The quality is 5-star, the adjustments are 5 stars. The rear BUIS takes a lot of rail space and I can’t even use it right now. It really needs to share the same rail space as the front BUIS.

No way to install a tritium front sight post. Very disappointed. Need to engineer a new front sight.

Like others have said before, these sights are of impeccable quality and exquisite construction. The sight picture is excellent and is an example of irons done right. However, I have one chief complaint – the front sight lacks adequate range of adjustment. Although designed for 5.56mm carbine applications, I mounted mine on an 8″ 9mm MPX and co-witnessed them with a red dot optic. Unfortunately, there is not enough adjustment range in the front sight and it bottomed out before achieving zero. I am a few hairs’ breadth shy of zero at 25m. This was highly disappointing, especially at the high price point. My options are to return them or take a file to the exquisite front sight. Either are painful decisions. Because of the prevalence of pistol caliber carbines, for which these sights may be employed, I recommend improving the range of adjustment in the front sight. The result will be a much more versatile piece of kit.

Note: I am reviewing the rear sight as a standalone unit rather than the front/rear set.

Pros: nice design, lightweight, looks great aesthetically, with no protruding knobs and a tool-less windage adjustment.

Cons: numerous proprietary idiosyncrasies. The rear aperture sits higher than the “A2 height” claimed — noticeably higher than comparable aftermarket fixed and folding rear sights made by other vendors. This becomes readily apparent if you have a co-witnessed red dot and then swap the rear sight out with this one. And because the threading is proprietary, one can’t swap out the rear aperture with aftermarket .052/.200 or .046/.200 apertures.

I originally bought a standalone rear sight two years ago intending to pair it with a standard taper-pinned F-height A2 front sight base on an irons-only dissipator build. I found that in order to zero my rifle at 50 yards, I had to raise my front sight post to a height flush with the height of the sight base’s ears, maxing out the elevation adjustment. For this reason, I was unable to zero my rifle at 100 yards as I originally wanted.

TL;DR: Fell short of expectations after using for more than a year on an irons-only build used in practical/action rifle competitions. The rear sight does not work well when paired with a pinned A2 front sight base (tested on two rifles). Works well only when used with Scalarworks’ own handguard-mounted sight.
